Some people are unhappy after the Urban Goose Working Group removed 1,547 eggs from geese nests along Kenaston Boulevard in Winnipeg.

Others said the move is needed to protect motorists.

The UGWG formed in 2011 to tackle spots where geese pose hazards, including for drivers along Kenaston, and consists of representatives from the provincial and federal governments, the City of Winnipeg and Winnipeg Airports Authority.

A petition against removing the geese eggs was launched on Change.org by Marianne Curtis.

The Wildlife Federation said the geese population is so high in Winnipeg because the urban habitat in the city is ideal with no predators, low cut grass and an abundance of nutrition.

Canada geese are protected under the Migratory Birds Convention Act.

Environment Canada said people can apply for a permit to destroy eggs and remove nests, but there are also short-term solutions including barriers, letting grass grow longer and scaring the birds off.
