A man is dead after a minivan he was in ended up on its roof in a deep water-filled ditch in western Manitoba.

The vehicle was found early this morning on Highway 45, about 16 kilometres east of Russell.

RCMP believe the van was going east when it left the road, struck an approach and flipped.

The driver -- a 36-year-old resident of Elphinstone, Manitoba -- was pronounced dead at the Russell hospital.

Police say he was wearing a seatbelt and the accident was not related to flooding, but they are not ruling out alcohol as a factor.
