A 25-year-old Saskatoon man has died after a brutal attack with a pool cue at a Winkler bowling alley.

Winkler police said Zachary Straughan died Monday at Health Sciences Centre.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends,” Winkler police said in a news release.

“The family has graciously consented to their son being considered for the organ donation program in hopes that it may save the life of someone in need.”

Police said Straughan and another man, who were working on the same work crew, were at the Valley Bowling Lanes in Winkler Saturday night. Officials said an argument over an unpaid debt turned violent.

According to police, Straughan was hit with a pool cue several times and knocked unconscious. The suspect fled, but was eventually apprehended at a nearby 7-Eleven.

Justin Leslie Bird, 29, also from Saskatoon, was charged with aggravated assault and possession of a controlled substance. Police said investigators are in discussion with the Crown’s office about the possibility of upgrading the charges.

Police said Bird remains in custody. He is scheduled to appear in Morden provincial court on Oct. 11.
