One by one, John Lenius collected shingles scattered around his Sage Creek yard.

Some were his, some he said belonged to a neighbour.

Wherever they came from, Lenius said it seems odd so many of these new homes lost their shingles.

"It's only a five-year-old house so I was hoping that kind of thing wouldn't happen,” Lenius said.

Roofer Rod Dekeyster said it happened in Sage Creek simply because the homes are located in such a wide-open area.

"That's just too much wind,” said Dekeyster. “If you have anything that's coming across and you get hit with a full 90 km/h wind they'll never stay. It's only nails holding them, they still lift up," he said.

And Sage Creek isn't alone. Roofers also went to work on older homes along Nairn Avenue. Dekeyster said his crew made eight stops to replace missing shingles before noon.

"Lots and lots of insurance claims. Roofs are ripped right apart in lots of areas,” he said.

You can make an insurance claim for wind damage but some homeowners said it’s just not worth paying the deductible.

"The challenge is if it's only 10 shingles it's not worth a claim. It's a few hundred bucks probably,” said Lenius.
