Staff at a Winnipeg convenience store gave a would-be robber more than he bargained for on Thursday.

Ravi Aulakh said a man entered his shop on Selkirk Avenue last night wearing a mask and armed with a knife.

It happened at Hadeda Convenience Store around 6:45 p.m. on Feb. 26.

The suspect went directly to the cash register area in an attempt to rob the store, and that’s when owners grabbed a bat and chased him down the street.

"I've seen him before somewhere. He was wearing a mask but I recognize the eyes, the face, walk," said Aulakh.

Aulakh said he called police about a minute later and he could hear the Air1 police helicopter circling the area almost immediately.

"They've caught every other person that's ever tried anything (here,)," said Aulakh.

He said he’s confident the suspect will be found.

Winnipeg police confirm they were called to a robbery in the 700 block of Selkirk Avenue last night. They said nothing was taken from the store.

So far, no arrests have been made.
