City crews are still working to fix a giant sinkhole on St. Mary’s Road that formed Wednesday afternoon near Morier Avenue.

Winnipeg police temporarily closed down southbound lanes on St. Mary’s Road Wednesday afternoon after the sinkhole opened up.

Barricades were put up while crews worked through the night to fix the main problem, a broken catch basin pipe.

“It’s the pipe that runs from the curb inlet, which is where water drains into on the roadway, into a sewer main line that runs down the centre line of St. Mary's Road,” said Susan Lambert, city engineer.

The city said crews haven’t fixed a sinkhole like this since the late 1990s. Road lanes later re-opened in the area.

City officials also said there had been no obvious signs to suggest the St. Mary’s sinkhole was forming.

Crews are expected to work until after the weekend to finish up the repairs to St. Mary’s Road.
