A fuel mistake may be the cause of a small plane crash in Thompson Tuesday evening.

The Transportation Safety Board said Keystone Flight 408 left Thompson en route to Winnipeg but had problems and turned around.

It crashed about two kilometres from the Thompson airport around 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, just short of the runway.

Eight people were on board were taken to hospital, including six passengers and two pilots. Keystone Air Service reported that all passengers were able to exit the plane on their own.

There is no further word on their condition at this time, however in a statement Keystone Air Service said the pilots' injuries appeared to be non-life threatening.

The company said the Navajo Chieftain aircraft may have been fueled with jet fuel in error. The Navajo would have required Avgas, authorities say.

The TSB is continuing to investigate.
