Spring is on the way and with warmer weather, flooding usually follows.

Manitoba's first flood outlook of the year won't be revealed until next month, but CTV News was invited into the forecasting centre for an exclusive sneak peak.

According to the executive director of Manitoba Water Stewardship, Steve Topping, it appears this spring's flood season will be mild compared to the devastating flood Manitoba experienced in 2011.

“"The Upper Assiniboine is normal to below normal,” said Topping. “The Red River, normal to below normal."

Topping said the forecast also calls for a higher than normal flood potential in the Souris Basin in North Dakota and in the Dauphin area.

Of course, said Topping, it is still early and depending on the weather, the outlook could change in the months to come.

A team of 12 track storms and review data to forecast annual flooding. According to Topping, the team uses their previous flooding experience to better forecast.

“2011 is a flood we all gained a tremendous amount of experience and capability.”
