US President Barack Obama said Saturday he stands ready to take military action against the Syrian regime whenever the United States chooses.

In Winnipeg, there are mixed opinions about what action should be taken.

Syrian Deema Alsayeed has lived in Canada for ten years.

She says  family and close friends still in Syria are disheartened by the Syrian government’s suspected use of chemical weapons against civilians.

Alsayeed said one close friend fears for her family’s lives.

“She also has young kids and she told me, I’m looking at my kids and I know they might be next,” said Alsayeed.

She said she thinks foreign intervention might be the only way to end a two-year-old civil war and that many still in Syria share her opinion.

Others in Winnipeg attended a protest near the Human Rights Museum to voice their opposition to possible US military action.

Canada has opted out of a military mission in Syria and demonstrators want the United States to do the same.

“America’s intervention is not going to promote peace in any way,” said protest organizer Dawn Fastabend.

President Obama has said he will seek the support of the United States Congress before launching an attack.
