Winnipeg police said they are looking for a suspect who approached a child Friday afternoon on River Avenue and tried to get the young boy to leave the area with him.

Officers were called to the area of the 100 block of River Avenue shortly after 1 p.m. on Aug. 10.

An 11-year-old boy had been playing in the area.

An unknown man approached the boy and tried to get the child to leave the area with him, said police.

The suspect fled when other people came to the aid of the boy.

Police said the child was not injured.

The suspect is described as a white male, about six feet tall (183 centimetres), weighing approximately 250 pounds (113 kilograms), with dark hair, wearing grey and white clothing, with a navy cap and sunglasses. He was also carrying a duffle bag.
