A feast welcomed some of Winnipeg’s newest families Sunday evening.

The Syrian Assembly of Manitoba invited new refugees to the Grand Mosque on Waverely Street.

Two families who arrived in Winnipeg from Syria earlier this month were in attendance.

About 18 families have recently arrived and a group of close to 100 Syrian community members wanted to throw a dinner party to welcome them.

"We wanted to show them that Canada is different and Canadians are different and that we are here for them, to help them if help is needed," said Tarek Habash of the Syrian Assembly of Manitoba.

The refugee families told their stories and exchanged contact information with others.
