Ducks are swimming, and the snow has melted away around Omand's Creek, but the area is far from picturesque.

In fact, it looks as if a garbage truck accidentally dumped its load up and down Empress Street.

"I just think it's absolutely disgusting the amount of trash out here," said Jarret Topley who was walking in the area.

The problem isn’t just in Omand’s Creek, either. Bags, coffee cups, pop bottles and other garbage make up a laundry list of litter on Empress.

The trash stretches From St. Matthews Avenue all the way down to Saskatchewan Avenue.

"When you drive by, you might not see it as much," said Tom Ethans from Take Pride Winnipeg. "But when you come across the street, your eyes are open and you go, ‘this is unbelievable!’"

Each year, Take Pride Winnipeg surveys the streets of Winnipeg for its annual Spring Litter Index.

It ranks them one on a scale from one to four, with four being the most filthy.

This year Empress is a 4. It isn't alone.

"I'd call this one of the worst streets in the city," said Tom Ethans. "But there are a number of 4's throughout the city of Winnipeg, not just this street."

Take Pride Winnipeg hopes Winnipeggers will organize in groups, or just roll up their sleeves as individuals, and clean away all of the garbage in their neighborhoods and near their workplaces.
