A cabin in Albert Beach was destroyed during an early morning fire.

Fire officials said they were called to the scene around 6:00 a.m. Wednesday morning.

They found a cottage completely consumed by fire. They said all occupants got out safely, but the cabin was destroyed.

A neighbour said a group of teens were staying there and partying late into the morning.

He said the group fired firecrackers at each other and near other properties on the street.

“They were shooting off firecrackers in the backyard and around the side between the two cottages,” said Robert Kartzmark, who saw the party.

“It looked like there were lights at the top of the trees. I couldn't figure out what was going on, so I came out here. All the tops of the trees were on fire,” he said.

“I don't know who owns it and quite often there's kids staying there. There doesn't seem to be any adults around,” said Daryl Barrott, who owns a cottage across the street.

“Well, it concerns me because this is a family cottage. It's been in our family since the late '70s and we've had a lot of good memories here. And to come down and find out that it could have burned down last night concerns me," he said.

Victoria Beach Police said there were 10 people between the ages of 16 and 18 staying at the cottage.

Police Chief Stewart MacPherson said he suspects a space heater was the cause of the fire.

He said one of the teens woke up after smelling smoke and noticed the fire.

The teen ushered his friends out through the smoke that was already shoulder height and they had to crouch as they left, he said.

MacPherson said they were lucky to get out when they did and all their personal belongings were destroyed.

MacPherson said he reviewed no complaints of firecrackers or partying that night.

The Office of the Fire Commissioner is investigating the fire.

“Our main concern was that all of the occupants of the house were able to get out,” said Dave Singleton, an investigator with the Office of the Fire Commissioner.

“The fire department was here quite early on but at that point it was already so far gone there was nothing that they could save.”
