Inderjit Claire Park on Concordia Avenue East officially opened on Saturday.

The park was named in honour of Inderjit Singh Claire, who moved to Winnipeg from India in 1986.

He has had ‘a lasting impact’ on the community, said Andrew Micklefield, MLA for Rossmere, in a release.

Claire was a science teacher who taught both in Canada and in India. He served as a counsellor and mentor and was active in various social and political spheres.

“Mr. Claire was such an important community member and leader in the Transcona area who dedicated his life to serving and inspiring others,” said Coun. Russ Wyatt, in a release. “It’s a pleasure to see the new Inderjit Claire Park being well-used by the neighbourhood so that Mr. Claire can continue to play an important role in the lives of community members.”

The Province of Manitoba and the City of Winnipeg funded the project through the Building Communities Initiative II partnership for a total investment of $589,000.
