A one-time drug dealer told court Tuesday he was unarmed before being shot from behind by police as he ran from officers in July 2007.

Constables Darrel Selley and Kristopher Overwater are on trial, accused of attempting to obstruct justice. Selley is also charged with attempted murder. Both have pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Kristofer Fournier told a jury Tuesday that a bullet hit him in the buttocks as he ran from police after leading them on a high speed chase in a stolen Yukon five years ago.

Fournier told the jury he was high on crystal meth in July 2007 while driving a stolen SUV.

The vehicle chase ended when the SUV and the officers' vehicles collided.

Fournier said he was unarmed as he ran down an alley to get away. He said he heard someone yell, "Stop, or I'll shoot" and then another voice that said, "Shoot him."

Fournier told court he didn't think he had done anything that would warrant an officer firing on him.

Fournier said he heard multiple shots before his leg went numb. The Crown said another bullet struck Fournier in the buttocks.

Under cross examination, Fournier denied grabbing for a police officer's weapon that was on the ground at the time he was shot.

Defence lawyers for the officers grilled Fournier about his lengthy criminal record.

Fournier admitted he was in another high speed chase with police two years after the 2007 incident.

Fournier testified he has turned his life around, but under cross examination he admitted there was a current warrant for his arrest for a criminal code offence.
