Two people escaped a fire Wednesday afternoon in a ground floor suite of a four-plex in Winnipeg.

It happened at around 3 p.m. on Chalmers Avenue, near Gateway Road.

Fire crews responded to a call of smoke and flames showing in the suite.

Two people inside the ground floor suite got out safely before fire crews arrived.

Firefighters rescued two cats from an upper-level suite.

Platoon Chief Doug Martin with the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said the cats received “oxygen therapy” from paramedics but weren’t hurt during the ordeal.

The fire was contained to the ground floor suite but Martin said neighbouring units may have suffered smoke damage.

The cause is still under investigation and there is no damage estimate available as of Wednesday afternoon.
