Two reserve soldiers were taken to hospital after their military vehicle crashed into a guard rail on the Trans-Canada Highway Friday night.

The soldiers were en route to a weekend training exercise at CFB Shilo when the incident happened just west of Highway 13 around 9:00 p.m.

“Manitoba had some rough weather this week. The soldiers are well trained in their driving and they are very prudent. But black ice is black ice, and as we know in Manitoba, it can sneak up on you,” said Maj. Mike Lagace, public affairs officer for 38 Canadian Brigade Group.

Lagace said other reservists headed to the exercise were on board a bus following closely behind the military vehicle. When the soldiers came upon the scene, they rushed to help the men.

Both reservists were sent to hospital in Portage la Prairie, where one has been treated and released.

The other, an army captain, sustained a serious back injury and was transferred to Health Sciences Centre for further treatment.
