A University of Winnipeg student will get a once in a lifetime chance to discuss mental health initiatives with members of the Royal Family.

Danielle Sicotte is one of 19 students chosen to meet with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in Victoria, B.C.

The meeting is scheduled for Oct. 1 aboard a ship operated by the Sail and Life Training Society.

Sicotte founded the University of Winnipeg’s chapter of Jack.org, a national network of young people working to end the stigma of mental illness. Sicotte was struggling with anxiety, and wanted to start a conversation with her peers about mental health.

The student representatives will be joined by Jack.org co-founder Eric Windeler and Sandra Hanington. They launched the organization after their son Jack’s suicide during his first year of university.

“We work with passionate student leaders from across Canada who believe, as we do, that we must transform the way we think and talk about mental health," said Windeler.

"The support Their Royal Highnesses show for youth mental health is bringing international exposure to the issue and helping to end the stigma, which in turn will improve and save young lives. We are honoured to have been selected to represent our sector and to discuss the transformational work our young leaders do across Canada."
