It’s a home away from home in Winnipeg for fans of the United States women's soccer team.

Supporters gathered Monday outside Investors Group Field, which is being called Winnipeg Stadium for FIFA’s purposes, in anticipation of Team U.S.A’s first match of the FIFA Women's World Cup and they used their outfits to put American patriotism on full display.

"I've got some pretty awesome socks and they match the boxers - the Captain America boxers,” said Abby Eggers, who travelled from St. Paul, Minnesota. “And then I have my U.S. scarf and I couldn't find a shirt so I just wore a white shirt. And I've got some bandanas."

Fans came from Arizona, California and New Mexico just name to name a few states.

For some, it's their first time seeing their national team play in-person.

"It's been a lifelong dream to see them,” said Sarah Lagos of St. Paul. “Honestly, I'm just in awe of the setup and the fact that we're going to be able to see them in person."

When the stadium gates opened, fans flooded in to get their first view of the pitch. Many were impressed even before the soccer started.

"Breathtaking actually,” said Mackenzie Ekern. “Can't believe I'm here.”

“I got goosebumps as I walked in,” said her sister Megan. “I was like, 'I'm so ready for this.’ I'm so excited."

Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce vice-president Loren Remillard said hotels, which are usually 70 per cent occupied at this time of year, are now 100 per cent full.

He said businesses and attractions will benefit from the World Cup.

"The impact will be felt city-wide,” said Remillard. “And even beyond the city. We're hearing about hotels and restaurants being busier in the capital region generally so all the way to Brandon we've heard people are booking."
