Main Street Project is hitting the street looking for people in need of shelter, warm clothes, or a safe ride home.

The Outreach Van is back on the street following a woman's death on Portage Avenue Sunday where the cold weather is believed to have played a factor.

Temperatures have been in or near the minus 20s since last week, so Main Street Project is out overnight, searching for vulnerable people.

Harley Barthlette, team leader at the Main Street Project Emergency Shelter, says while many are turning down offers to stay in the shelter, people are still happy to see the van travelling around the city.

"They have been very thankful for that, and very thankful we are out on the streets patrolling, caring for people because a couple people have mentioned that prior to this, they felt that no one was actually out there caring for them, so a lot of people have simply thanked us,” Barthlette says.

Many people accepted a hat or gloves, and a cup of coffee from the Outreach team.

Barthlette says Main Street Project is under-funded, but their mission is to help those in need, which is why the van is once again patrolling.
