The union representing bus drivers and mechanics says the city is not playing fair in negotiations and it could be putting drivers in harm’s way.

On Wednesday, the city released the negotiating positions for both sides when it comes to wages.

The city said it offered an 8 per cent wage increase for drivers over four years and 8.81 per cent for mechanics.

It says the union wants a three-year wage hike of 10 per cent for drivers and 20 per cent for mechanics.

The city calls its position reasonable and fair.

But Amalgamated Transit Union president John Callahan said some passengers could react badly towards drivers because their wage increase position, which is higher than the city’s current offer, has been made public by civic officials.

And he could be right.

A video posted on Facebook shows a passenger yelling at a bus driver over the fact his bus is late. The angry passenger mentions the driver's membership in the union, swears and calls all transit drivers cowards, before storming off the bus.

Several buses are being cancelled or delayed as drivers refuse overtime while they negotiate with the city.

CTV has requested an interview with the city.
