Members from various city trail associations met Saturday to plan for the future.

Volunteers gathered at the Norquay Community Centre and even got down on their hands and knees to study a map of the city.

“We’re looking at the $60 million worth of street renewals that the City of Winnipeg is doing this year,” said Andres Swanson with the Winnipeg Trails Association.

“Folks are mapping it out and giving their ideas and input into what we should do because a trail network is built in bits and pieces,” he said.

The group is concerned about developing linkages around Winnipeg, such as the one coming between North Kilodonan and East St. Paul. There, the Perimeter Highway will be raised in order to connect the communities.

The group is also looking to better trail maintenance and provide safer access points for crossing major routes.

"We need everything from lighting to benches to far better intersections where the road meets trails. I lot of people were here to talk about connectivity,” said Swanson.

It wants to ensure trails and cycle tracks are also expanded so people can enjoy an active lifestyle.
