A group of volunteers set out on Sunday night to tell Winnipeg’s homeless population about the recent deaths of two men.

On Saturday, the two men were found blocks apart on Hargrave Street and Portage Avenue.

Police said both victims were vulnerable, and urged Winnipeg’s homeless population to be vigilant.

A vigil was held Sunday on Donald St., which was attended by about 40 people.

Activists said homeless people don’t always have access to television or internet, and set out to warn people in person.

“A lot of us do care, and we care about our community. And we want to help. We want to keep our people safe,” said volunteer Vin Clarke.

Clarke spent years on the street. He said the community is close-knit.

"When somebody's taken from us in a violent way like this, it really does bring the community together a lot," said Clarke.

Clarke was joined by Morley, who has spent the past six months living on Winnipeg’s streets.

“The stuff that we’ve seen and the stuff that we go through, it’s hard. Life is hard,” said Morley.

The deaths were particularly upsetting for Morley.

His cousin, Myles Monias, was found beaten to death in a bus shack on April tenth.

Monias was also homeless.

“What I can’t figure out is, why my cousin had to die,” said Morley.

The men plan to patrol the streets downtown for several days.
