A water main break on Portage Avenue sent water gushing into the street Monday.

The break happened just before 4 p.m. in the 2600 block of Portage between Harcourt Street and Booth Drive.

Crews rushed to repair the damage, but not before so much water gushed from the main that it covered an entire lane and curb.

Water tanks were parked on both the north and south sides of Portage between Harcourt and Ronald Street Monday evening, partially blocking traffic.

A number of businesses in the area were affected, with an entire apartment block and at least two restaurants dealing with interruption to their running water.

Officials said they hoped to have the main repaired by Monday night.

It’s not known what caused the break.
