Mayor Brian Bowman appears open to the idea of lowering proposed amounts for growth fees on new homes.

Two reports recommend an $18,000 fee for an 1,800 square foot home, while charges for commercial and office space would be higher.

Consultations are ongoing with city councillors and the development industry over potential exemptions and fee amounts.

Bowman suggested Tuesday he'd consider a lesser charge.

"We're listening,” Bowman said.

Some councillors said after coming out of a closed-door meeting Friday that a January 2017 implementation date recommended in city reports was unrealistic.

But Bowman said he'd still like to see the fees in place for 2017.

Last week, Bowman's inner circle delayed a vote indefinitely on putting growth fees in place.

Bowman said growth in sprawling suburbs and other new developments are not covering the full costs of related roads, bridges and services.

The industry disputes the claim and worries the new charges could slow the market.
