Winnipeg chef Mandel Hitzer donated $8,800 to the Winnipeg Boys and Girls Tuesday.

To raise the money for local charities, Hitzer slept on the frozen Assiniboine River for 21 nights. His Great Canadian Sleepout project started January 24 and ended February 13. Along with sleeping on the river he ran a pop up restaurant called RAW: almond.

The Boys and Girls Club said it will use the money for something close to Hitzer’s heart.

“Food is a large part of what we do,” said Ron Brown president and CEO of the Boys and Girls Club Winnipeg. “Every day we have a meal or snack for every child or youth that comes to our clubs. That's a big food bill."

Hitzer will give the rest of the money he raised to FortWhyte Alive and the Resource Centre for Manitobans who are Deaf-Blind.
