If a city councillor gets her way pedestrians will walk across Portage Avenue at Main Street.

Jenny Gerbasi tabled a motion Wednesday morning to study options for opening up Winnipeg's most famous intersection.

Gerbasi says the intersection is a key hub of downtown activity with a lot of office space connecting the area with the Exchange district.

Similar plans in the past have failed to get off the ground.

One idea that's being considered this time is what's called a "scramble."

"What that is, is you just stop all the car traffic, the pedestrians go across, even diagonally, and then you open up the intersection for cars again,” said Gerbasi.

In recent years, Toronto and Vancouver have added scramble intersections to their downtowns.
