In a marathon eight-hour meeting with about 20 delegates, the city’s Water and Waste, Riverbank Management and the Environment committee decided not to scrap its proposed organic waste curb side pick-up program.

Up for discussion Thursday was a motion put forward by Coun. Ross Eadie, and seconded by Russ Wyatt.

It would halt public consultation and planning for organic waste pickup, in order to re-examine other options.

Many delegates who spoke were in favour of curbside pickup, but not in favour of the proposed flat fee options that would see residents choose between three collection options, costing between $55 and $100.

The discussion became quite heated at times, with voices raised more than once during delegate questioning.

In the final hour, Coun. Jenny Gerbasi put forth an amendment to the motion.

Instead of suspending the plan, she called for more public consultation, consultation with the newly created climate change task force, and report back in 120 days.

Councilors voted in favour of that amendment.

A report is now expected back to the committee in 120 days.
