They might be small, but those honoured at the Kids Who Care awards ceremony Saturday showed they have big heart.

The annual event was held at Winnipeg Harvest, and recognizes children and youth who collect food, raise money and volunteer their time for the food bank.

"You can do anything you believe you can, can't is only a word. Only if you believe you can't, then you can't,” Atticus McIlwraith, a 2014 award recipient, told the large crowd.

This year, Mayor Brian Bowman handed out the awards and congratulated the winners.

Bowman said amazing things can happen with a little support. A message echoed by the co-founder of the Kids Who Care program.

"That success has only been based on the fact that both the parents and grandparents have been involved tremendously with a number of families across the Winnipeg area, and for that I extend my sincere thanks," said Ron O'Donovan.

Children of all ages can earn an award. On Saturday, a two-year-old boy received an honour for donating 13 pounds of food for his second birthday.

The Kids Who Care awards have been handed out in Winnipeg for 15 years. More than 970 children and youth have been recognized for their efforts to help Manitoba families in need.

O’Donovan and his wife, Eunice, started Kids Who Care after their granddaughter, Aynsley, wanted to see a program recognizing the efforts of generous young people in the community.
