Kurdish - Manitobans celebrated an important victory against ISIS Saturday evening.

A group gathered at the Eagle Club in Winnipeg to stand in solidarity with people from the Syrian town of Kobani.

"Defeating ISIS is basically protecting our values, so it's a very important milestone,” said Hisan Emru, a Kurdish Canadian.

Islamic state militants took over the town near the Turkish border in October 2014.

Kurdish ground forces, supported by U.S. and allied air forces, have now taken Kobani back.

Canada’s CF-18 fighter jets have been contributing air strikes in the fight against ISIS in Syria and Iraq.

Though the militants have left Kobani and people are returning to their homes, the town bears the scars of months of fighting between ISIS and Kurdish forces.

People in Winnipeg are raising money for a Canadian aid organization helping to restore the town.
