Winnipeg police officers involved in a fatal high-speed chase won’t face any discipline after the Independent Investigation Unit concluded they acted “appropriately.”

In the early hours of Nov. 23, 2015, the officers were chasing a Ford Explorer allegedly involved in robberies earlier that morning from Polo Park to downtown, the IIU said in a news release.

Around 1:20 a.m. the officers pursued the Explorer, at speeds estimated up to 160 kilometres per hour, down Portage Avenue when they lost sight of it.

Less than a minute later, they found it had crashed at Portage Avenue and Good Street.

The woman driving the vehicle was thrown out of the vehicle. The other occupant, a male, ran away but was arrested nearby.

Paramedics rushed the woman to hospital where she was declared dead.

The IIU launched an investigation, as it does whenever there is a fatality involving police. The Winnipeg Police Board appointed a civilian monitor, who held monthly meetings with the IIU throughout the investigation.

After reviewing witness accounts, video surveillance footage, and a pathologist’s report that found the driver was intoxicated by cocaine and methamphetamine, IIU Civilian Director Zane Tessler concluded that the officers were justified in their actions.
