Winnipeg police arrested a suspect wanted on a Canada-wide warrant Tuesday.

A tweet by police around 6:10 p.m. said 42-year-old Gregory Blaine Martin had been arrested and taken into custody.

Earlier in the day, authorities issued a Canada-wide warrant for a suspect following an incident at a routine checktstop on the weekend where a driver fled after failing alcohol screening, dragging an officer along the road.

It is not known exactly how far the officer was dragged, but police said he was treated in hospital for scrapes and bruises.

The officer has since been released from hospital.

"The focus should be on the actions of this individual who chose to flee. Our member did attempt to stop this vehicle and thankfully his injuries are only minor in nature,” said Const. Jason Michalyshen with the Winnipeg Police Service.

Police said the officer was trying to stop the suspect at Waverley Street near Lake Crest Road, when the suspect sped away.

The suspect continued to drive fast and collided with a median on Lake Crest Road, before abandoning the vehicle on Chancellor Drive and fleeing on foot.

Neighbours told CTV the man tore through a fence as he fled.

The owner of the car reported the vehicle stolen when contacted by police. That person is a relative of Martin.

Police would not say whether or not the breathalyzer test was administered while the driver was still behind the wheel.

George Van Mackelberg with the Winnipeg Police Association said encounters with drivers at checkstops can often be unpredictable.

"When we do a checkstop, there's a whole plan that goes into it and there's a way it's to be done. You try to take everything that you can into the equation, but you can't account for everything," said Van Mackelberg.

Winnipeg police thank members of the public for their support in the arrest.

Martin faces multiple charges, including causing bodily harm by criminal negligence, driving while impaired and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm.
