Winnipeg police are looking to speak with witnesses following a deadly shooting in the North End Friday night.

Police responded to a report of shots being fired near the corner of Selkirk Avenue and Parr Street around 10 p.m.

Officers said a man in his 20s was suffering from a gunshot wound and was sent to hospital in critical condition where he later died.

Const. Jay Murray said the victim is from Winnipeg, but police are not releasing the man's name or age at this time.

Murray said it's too soon to say whether the shooting is gang-related.

Saturday morning a large area remained blocked to traffic along Parr Street between Selkirk Avenue and Pritchard Avenue and along the sidewalk on the south side of Selkirk Avenue.

Community reacts

The shooting has parents who live nearby concerned about the safety of children.

"Our children should not have to wake up and see this. What's going to change it? I don't know," said one mom of seven.

“Scary,” said Somphone Oumthongvichith, who lives one block away with his three grandchildren. He said he doesn’t let them leave the yard without being accompanied by an adult.

Bear Clan Patrol Executive Director James Favel said Saturday children live in the suites attached to the residence where the shooting took place.

He said children in the complex recently alerted his team about some needles left out near the corner.

Favel wants the gun violence to stop so kids stay safe and more positive change can continue.

"People need to recognize that those things shoot through schools, they shoot through walls and we got to stop using those things, stop being violent that way, anybody can do damage," said Favel.
