A new low-cost airline is looking to take flight in Canada, possibly setting up a crew and maintenance base in Winnipeg.

Canada Jetlines, based out of British Columbia, is in the process of establishing itself in the airline industry offering competitive seat pricing.

Jet Metal, the company that is undertaking this adventure, is currently awaiting on the federal government to relax the rules on foreign ownership, as they have a European business that’s interested in investing in the airline.

They said the foreign company would not have full ownership of Canada Jetlines, but does want the ability to be a influence in decision making.

Using Winnipeg as one of three hubs for the airline, is a smart business decision, according to Jet Metal. It said the city has a lot of trained maintenance personnel that stuck around after the closure of Air Canada’s maintenance base in 2012.

The company said it has provided the government its business plan to travel to underserved airports and customers that are being locked out of the market by price.

If they are given the green light, Jet Metal said they plan to be airborne within 6 months, starting by flying Boeing 737’s.

Jet Metal also added that Canada Jetlines is a different model than New Leaf as a re-seller. They said they will offer a consistent base price that will be lower than West Jet and Air Canada, with baggage included.
