A 24-year-old Winnipeg native has made history after becoming the first Canadian-born woman to win a NASCAR-sanctioned race in the United States.

On Saturday night, Amber Balcaen won a NASCAR Whelen All American Series race at Motor Mile Speedway in Virginia.

Balcaen is a third generation race car driver, her website said.

“My greatest passions in life are racing cars and helping others. I strive on being a positive role model and inspirational figure to females around the world,” her website reads.

Hero’s Homecoming

After an unforgettable night on the racetrack, Amber Balcaen was back on home soil Sunday.

"To come from Winnipeg, to be a female, to not come from money and be able to not only compete in NASCAR but to win a race for Winnipeg and for my fans, friends and family it feels amazing," said Balcaen.

Her parents were on hand to greet her at Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport Sunday night, and said they couldn’t be more proud to see their daughter have so much success representing both Winnipeg and Canada.

"It's just been a great thing to watch as parents and to see her do this and she's done it on her own with her ability, drive, and it's exciting and we're obviously proud parents," said Mike Balcaen.
