Treacherous weather conditions caused school closures and delays of service for areas in southern Manitoba hit hard by a winter storm.

The Winnipeg School Division said the severe weather has caused some transportation delays and buses are having difficulty managing side streets for dismissal drop-off times.

"Schools are contacting families of bused children to inform parents that buses will attempt to drop-off children at their normal drop-off sites. If buses are unable to navigate the streets, students will be returned to their home school where they will be supervised until parents can pick them up," a release said on Tuesday afternoon.

The division said some parents have opted to pick up their children directly from their school.

The Trans-Canada Highway was closed from Headingley to the Saskatchewan border for most of the day Tuesday, according to the provincial highways authority.

Around 6: 30 p.m. Tuesday, Highway 1, from Headingley to Portage La Prairie, re-opened.

Manitobans could be in for 15 to 30 centimetres of snow between Tuesday and Wednesday and in some places, it’s already a mess. City sanding trucks and plows are working to keep bus routes and collector streets in Winnipeg open.

Several school divisions around Manitoba have already announced closures for Wednesday. (See list below)

Some flights may be affected. Travellers are advised to check flights before leaving for the airport.
