The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority said it plans to open 13 public flu clinics throughout the city, starting on Oct. 18 to offer free shots.

Officials said the flu shot protects against three of the most common strains of influenza that the World Health Organization expects to circulate this season.

"Everyone has a good reason to get the shot," said Arlene Wilgosh, president and CEO of the Winnipeg Health Region, in a statement. "For me, it's like voting ... it's the right and responsible thing to do. I'm getting my shot to protect myself, my family and everyone else I come in contact with."

The clinics will operate from Oct. 18 – 22. Information on locations and hours is available by calling 956-SHOT, or going online to the WRHA's website.
