Construction is set to begin on a $1.2 million daycare expansion at The University of Winnipeg.

The new project, which is being funded by the province, the university, and The University of Winnipeg Students’ Association, will bring in 32 new children and nine new employees to the existing daycare.

“We’re seeing a lot of need. The waitlists in the past have been really long so it’s difficult for students to actually get in, let alone other people in the community who need childcare on a regular basis too,” said UWSA President Laura Garinger.

The UWSA has operated a daycare on campus for nearly 30 years.

Construction is set to begin later this month and is expected to be completed by November.

The daycare will remain open while the expansion is built.
