11 train cars derail, closing Manitoba road for hours

A train derailment near Portage la Prairie had traffic closed for several hours and almost a dozen railcars completely off the tracks.

The incident happened around 2:30 a.m., according to CN, at Highway 16 and Road 45 W just northwest of Portage la Prairie.

Manitoba RCMP was made aware of the derailment around 4:15 a.m. It was first reported that six railcars had come off the track, but CN is now reporting a total of 11 cars that toppled over.

CN said there were no leaks and no one was injured.

Highway 16 was closed until just before 3 p.m.

"CN would like to apologize for the inconvenience caused by this incident as well as thank local first responders for their assistance," a CN spokesperson said in an email to CTV News Winnipeg.
