RCMP are investigating a crash that killed a Steinbach man early Thursday morning.

Shortly before 1 a.m. on Aug. 23, officers and emergency crews were called to the scene of a collision between a semi-truck and pedestrian on Highway 52, about six kilometres east of Steinbach.

The 19-year-old pedestrian from Steinbach was pronounced dead at the scene. Police shut down the highway for four hours while crews responded.

RCMP said a semi-truck hauling a trailer was headed westbound on Highway 52 at the time of the crash.

The driver believed the vehicle had hit some wildlife.

Officers said he stopped the vehicle a short distance later and realized a pedestrian had been hit.

Early indications suggest the pedestrian may have been walking in the road, said police.

The name of the pedestrian has not been released.

RCMP said the driver had not been under the influence of alcohol.

Officers continue to investigate the crash.
