CTV News has learned an aboriginal elder who works with inmates at a Manitoba jail was arrested for suspected drug trafficking.

The elder was arrested on Nov. 20 after police caught him with marijuana.

CTV News has learned officers believe those drugs were destined for the Headingley Correctional Centre and officers were suspicious of the elder for some time.

Because the man has not been officially charged, CTV is prevented from releasing his name.

Officials with Manitoba Corrections said that everyone, including visitors, staff, and aboriginal elders who do work in the jail are "subject to searches."

However, the officials did not say if elders are searched every time they enter the jail.

Elders are held in high regard in the prison system as they play a valuable role guiding inmates through cultural teachings.
