Snow, freezing rain expected for most of the Maritimes Sunday into Monday

A series of weather warnings are in place across the Maritimes warning of snow, freezing rain and extreme cold.

New Brunswick

Much of New Brunswick is under a snowfall warning. Environment Canada says most areas could see more than 25 centimetres into Monday morning.

“An area of low pressure will rapidly track across Nova Scotia tonight into tomorrow morning bringing heavy snow to New Brunswick. Gusty northerly winds will develop behind the low and combine with the freshly fallen snow to cause periods of reduced visibility in blowing snow during the day Monday,” reads a warning from the agency.

An extreme cold warning is also in effect for northwestern parts of the province. A cold arctic airmass is expected to settle over the region Monday night until Wednesday morning. Temperatures may go down to –40 C.

Nova Scotia

In Nova Scotia, a freezing rain warning is in effect for Cumberland and northern Colchester counties from late Sunday evening until Monday morning.

“An intensifying weather system will push a rain/snow boundary across central Nova Scotia later tonight and into tomorrow morning,” it reads.

“There is strong likelihood of a persistent period of freezing rain near this boundary, with accumulating snow to the west of it and rain further to the east.”

A snowfall warning is also in effect for Cumberland County, where 15 to 20 cm is expected.

Meanwhile, a special weather statement is in place for parts of western and central Nova Scotia warning of messy weather.

“At this time precipitation is expected to mainly fall as rain with a transition to snow, or possibly freezing rain, by morning for most areas. Snowfall accumulations can be expected over areas of higher terrain. However, there remains an unusually high degree of uncertainty in the exact track of this system, a slight shift to the south may prompt snowfall or freezing rain warnings,” Environment Canada says.

Prince Edward Island

It’s a similar weather situation across Prince Edward Island.

A freezing rain warning is currently in effect for Kings and Queens counties.

“An intensifying weather system will push a rain/snow boundary across central Prince Edward Island later tonight and into tomorrow morning. There is strong likelihood of a persistent period of freezing rain near this boundary, with accumulating snow to the west of it and rain further to the east,” the warning reads.

A snowfall warning is also in effect for western P.E.I. where heavy snow and gusty winds are expected.
