As the brisk weather settles in, staff at a Barrie shelter is seeing an influx of cats and kittens coming through their doors from all walks of life.

Furry Friends Animal Shelter is a non-profit, no-kill shelter that specializes in rescuing, rehabilitating, and re-homing abandoned and abused cats and kittens, as stated on their website.

Supported by the community, the shelter relies on volunteers and donations to fulfill its mission. One of the big expenses the shelter says they face is the cost of veterinary food.

A single case can cost around $100, which lasts for about two weeks, according to the shelter. While this may not seem like much, with up to 30 special cats and kittens in their care at any given time, the costs quickly add up.

Ozzie, one of the shelter’s long-term residents, is an example of the care Furry Friends provides. Having lived at the shelter for nearly 11 years, Ozzie has received regular vet visits, dental work, meals, toys and treats, shared a member from the shelter.

Most recently, he underwent surgery for a hematoma in his ear. Although he’s not a candidate for adoption, Ozzie, like all the shelter’s beloved residents, receives the utmost care.

Furry Friends is reaching out for support. The shelter says that donations made before Dec., 31 can receive a charitable tax receipt.
