The death of a five-year-old girl in Brandon Thursday is being called a tragic mishap.

Relatives were in mourning Friday.

"They haven't been able to sleep. It has been really hard. The mother has been crying the whole night," said Elmer Manzanares, the family's pastor.

Dayanny Nunez Bonilla died after she was run over Thursday afternoon.

Police said she was struck by a truck backing up in the 1500 block of 26th Street.

After she was struck, the driver took Dyanny to hospital, where she later died, said her family.

"It's most certainly a tragic accident. And I think it emphasizes checking the blind spots around your vehicle before moving it," said Const. Ron Burgess from the Brandon Police Service.

Police are still investigating.

But officers said speed and alcohol are not factors and no charges have been laid.

The child's father Santos Nunez, originally from Honduras, spoke with CTV News with Manzanares serving as translator.

He said the little girl left home to play with a friend nearby. The mother saw from the door as the child was run over.

"She saw the whole impact," said Manzanares.

"It's tragic and scary," said Ashley Taron, a parent in the area.

Dyanny's father said she was a loving and affectionate daughter – a little girl whose life was taken much too soon.

The family said funeral arrangements are still being made.

They said they'd like to have the little girl buried in their home country of Honduras.
