Health Canada has issued a warning about over-the-counter acne products.

The government agency advises Canadians products containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid may cause rare, but serious allergic reactions.

Symptoms include hives, swelling of the face, eyes, lips, mouth and throat to a possibly life-threatening anaphylactic reaction -- which can come on quickly.

Asa result of its safety review, Health Canada wants manufacturers to include the risks as part of its labelling.
