As campers are preparing for the last long weekend of summer, provincial park crews are bracing themselves for larger-than-usual crowds.

A provincial spokesperson said camping numbers are up over last year by about two per cent. The province has received about 63,100 reservations so far, with some campsites reporting extremely busy seasons.

The rise comes despite provincial park fees being reinstituted this year. For 2010 and 2011, the province waived entry fees to provincial parks. The fees were reintroduced in 2012.

As for this long weekend, campgrounds in the northern and western regions still have campsites available for Saturday while camp sites in southern Manitoba have spots open for Sunday night.
