Charges have been laid in the brutal attack of a 14 month old baby.

Police say 19-year old Nikita Solange Eaglestick has been charged with Attempted Murder, Abduction, Aggravated Assault and Failure to Comply with Conditions of a Recognizance.

Police were called to the Tyndall Avenue and Chudley Street area around 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning after reports of a violent assault on a child.

Nearby resident Tyler Bilsborrow said he thought he saw a woman abusing a cat. As the 18-year old moved closer he realized the woman was holding a baby by the neck and slamming her face into the ground.

The suspect fled when Bilsborrow approached.

Officials have revealed the child was taken from a residence in the 100 block of Gilbert Avenue. It happened while a party was taking place inside the home. The child's mother said she saw Eaglestick in the house but did not know who she was.

The woman said she later went to check on her daughter and discovered the baby was not in her crib.

A motive for the kidnapping and attack is not clear at this time but the suspect is in police custody.

The baby has been upgraded to stable condition.

The Child Abuse Unit is investigating.
