According to the RCMP, an investigation into a fire that destroyed the 110-year-old United Church in Starbuck has led to charges against a 42-year-old man.

Crews were called to the blaze around 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 16, 2014.

Police said the suspect had been burning leaves and yard debris in a barrel on a property nearby when the fire got out of control and spread to the church.

The man has been charged with Starting a Fire that Burns Out of Control under the Wildfires Act and he faces a $1297.30 fine.

Damage to the church is estimated at more than $500,000.
