A charity event called Tea for E.D. was held on Sunday at the Fort Garry Hotel to raise money to help those with eating disorders.

Red River college student Emily Doer was the head organizer of the event. She struggled with bulimia for years, and voluntarily admitted herself to the Health Sciences Centre Adult Eating Disorders program in 2011.

Now, she hopes to raise awareness of the help she says saved her life.

“I think people should feel that can share their story and ask for help, and my goal is just to bring the shame down, share my story, and maybe there is someone who might feel embarrassed or shame and feel okay about asking for help,” said Doer at the event.

CTV’s Eleanor Coopsammy hosted the 500-seat event. Money raised will help expand the Health Sciences Centre Adult Eating Disorders program. Currently there are four hospital beds, outpatient services, and therapy sessions.

Doer is the daughter of former Premier Gary Doer.
