Police charged a Winnipeg dentist with sexually assaulting five underage boys between 1998 and 2014. Police charged Ronald Walter Peterson, 68, with sexual assault and sexual interference.
According to a list online provided by the Manitoba Dental Association, Peterson practices at Harstone Dental Centre in Charleswood. Police say Peterson had contact with the victims, all of whom are under 16 years old, in a professional setting as well as while socializing in public.
It’s unclear if any of the victims were patients.
He faces five charges of sexual assault and five charges of sexual interference.
According to police, victims did come forward in the past, but it wasn't until May when two boys came forward that police were able to piece together a pattern and make an arrest.
"We were able to put together a more in-depth investigation. We were able to learn more about the individual," said Const. Jason Michalyshen.
Police arrested Peterson on Nov. 13 and released him on a promise to appear in court.
The Manitoba Dental Association says they’re aware of the charges against Peterson and have protocols to deal with such allegations. The association says a peer review is conducted when a complaint is filed and disciplinary measures can include a removal of license.
Police haven’t confirmed if Peterson is still practicing dentistry.
A spokesperson from the Harstone Dental Clinic contacted CTV News late Sunday night, issuing the following statement: "Dr. Peterson is no longer associated with this clinic. Additionally, the clinic has no knowledge of the allegations regarding Dr. Peterson, other than what has already been reported in the media."
CTV News contacted Harstone Dental Centre Sunday night, Peterson's name and voice were taken off the company's voicemail message.
Residents who live on the same street as Peterson were shocked Saturday to learn disturbing allegations about their neighbour.
"Everyone here seems like really nice people, so that's super, super scary," said James Meyer.
